Fire Departments from Blount County and the cities of Alcoa and Maryville are joining forces on Saturday, June 9 – from 9 a.m. until noon – to educate and assist the public with their life-saving smoke alarms. The event will be held at the Blount County Public Library at 508 N Cusick Street. Personnel from all three fire departments will be on site partnering in this effort to educate adults and kids about the importance of working smoke alarms. They will also be making appointments to inspect the life-saving devices in homes and assist with installation if needed.
“Smoke alarms can be intimidating and are often forgotten, but they are the first line of defense to keep our citizens safe in the event of a fire.” Blount County Fire Chief Doug McClanahan said. “Our primary goal is to keep our citizens safe and prevent the tragic consequences of undetected fires.” Alcoa Fire Chief Roger Robinson said, “Not only is it important to ensure working condition, but many people are unaware that smoke alarms have a service life of ten years and should be replaced after that. There are many types of smoke alarms and guidelines about where they should be placed in the home. We can help provide peace of mind to our citizens by visiting the home and making sure the alarms are properly placed and in good working condition as well as show how to test and maintain them.” Citizens can schedule a smoke alarm inspection visit at the June 9 event. Fire personnel will show up at the home and ensure the devices are in working condition, in the proper locations, and install new equipment as needed. There will also be treats and activities for the kids – including Smoky the Fire Dog, fire gear to try on, and meet the fire fighters and see the fire trucks. For more information, contact the Maryville Fire Department at 865-273-3675, the Alcoa Fire Department at 865-981-4142, or the Blount County Fire Protection District at 865-983-2133. The Standard and Poor’s (S&P) credit rating for the City’s general obligation (GO) debt has been increased from AA to AA+ as of April 25, 2018. Chief Financial Officer Mike Swift announced the rating improvement to City Council at their May meeting. Swift also reported that the S&P has assigned the AA+ rating to the upcoming 2018 GO bonds to be sold in May.
The improved rating reflects the City’s long-term strategy of improved financial management policies and procedures. Higher credit ratings are associated with lower risk of default and result in lower interest rates on municipal bonds (the money cities borrow for capital projects). The rating improvement is a favorable change for City tax and rate payers. According to the S&P Global RatingsDirect® summary dated April 25, 2018, “The change is based on the formalization and implementation of several comprehensive management practices and policies.” The report continues to outline key factors in the rating including “very strong management, with ‘strong’ financial policies and practices, strong budgetary performance, very strong budgetary flexibility and very strong liquidity” among others. The S&P assessment of City management was raised to “very strong” from the previous “adequate” which was based on the “formalization of a long-term financial plan and reporting practices, as well as comprehensive updates to the long-term capital improvement plan and debt management policy.” To read the report, click here. Beginning May 1st, city of Maryville Water and Sewer Department will conduct annual inspections of residential lawn irrigation system backflow preventers. State and federal regulations require these devices be tested and inspected annually by the water department in accordance with the City’s cross-connection control program. These systems must be de-winterized and operational up to the number two shutoff valve of the backflow device prior to testing. Devices not installed or not in service will result in return trips and return inspection fees charged to the customer’s utility account. For more information call 273-3304.
