Previously in place was an “asphalt swale drainage system” meant to run stormwater through a grassy ditch to the creek. However, the system was not effective and did not route water efficiently in the area. Additionally, the old sidewalks were not angled correctly and spilled stormwater into yards. The new sidewalks have been elevated to six inches in height which keeps stormwater moving down the street to the newly installed curb inlets which divert stormwater into the catch basin. Taking out the grass swale also allowed crews to widen South Cedar Street on both sides by two feet. Aside from the drainage benefit, sidewalks have been widened by 1.5 feet making the new width 5.5 feet. This width allows for two people to walk side-by-side comfortably – improving walkability in the area. Crew Supervisor, Tim Green said he expects the department’s portion of the project between Karrow Street and Ray Avenue to be completed by the end of June. Contractors will finish the section between Ray Avenue and Mountain View Avenue due to the various utilities in the area. Once the entire section is complete, the road will be resurfaced. Green said, “We have already seen the benefits of this project in terms of drainage and are excited to complete it. We think the people using these sidewalks as well as the residents in the area will be very happy with the end result.” For more information, please call the department of Engineering and Public Works (865) 273-3302.
