The Brown School Road safety project TDOT began in August has been delayed due to an issue with AT&T utilities that was not discovered until construction began. AT&T has to relocate underground fiber optic conduit to a new fiber optic duct bank. This issue has delayed the project at least three months. Once the AT&T work is complete, the signal installation will take two months - and paving and finishing work could take an additional two months. Factoring in weather delays, the project may be extended into summer 2019.
The original completion target was December 31. Previously posted 8-20-18: A section of Brown School Road from Old Knoxville Pike to E Broadway Avenue has been closed to through traffic. The TDOT project is to improve traffic safety in the area - and includes widening Broadway and adding a traffic signal. The TDOT safety improvement project will align Brown School Road at East Broadway Avenue with Eagleton Road. A conventional 4-leg traffic signal will be installed. East Broadway will be widened to accommodate left turns on both sides of the signal. The East Broadway and Brown School Road approaches will each have a left turn signal. The attached pdf shows the project plan. (Click to download) Note: pdf is not supported by explorer. Please use Google Chrome TDOT has contracted with Southern Constructors to complete the project. The City of Maryville will perform some utility relocations. TDOT anticipates the project will be complete by December 31, 2018. The sidewalk widening project on South Cedar Street has been underway since late November. The contractor has run into complications throughout the project with underground utilities. Maryville engineers have decided more space is needed to safely work on the project. Effective immediately, South Cedar Street will be closed between Willow Drive and Mountain View Avenue until January 11.
Detours will be posted around the work zone. Northbound traffic (from Maryville Junior High to Maryville High) will be detoured along Melrose. Southbound traffic (from Maryville High to Maryville Junior High) will be detoured along Cunningham/ Willow. For more information on the widening project, click here - or call 865-273-3500. Contractors cut a gas line on S. Cedar Street near Ray Avenue causing a temporary road closure. Fire Department personnel and Atmos Gas Company are on scene to ensure repairs are made and the area is safe. We expect the road to be reopened soon. More information will be posted as it is available.
City of Maryville Water & Sewer will have South Cedar closed to through traffic from Ray Avenue to Mountain View for the remainder of the week (December 11 - 14) due to complications with a sewer manhole repair. This will extend the concurrent sidewalk project to a 24-hour condition while the repair work is completed. For more information, contact Engineering & Public Works at (865) 273-3500.
