City of Maryville contractor Joseph Construction’s repair and renovation work on the Broadway Avenue parking garage continues, but progress has been delayed due to weather and unexpected construction issues.
Rain has been a factor for 19 days so far and has created delays – especially with the Geofoam installation. Also, crews determined the stamped concrete paving on the plaza was adhered to the concrete in a way that would require an additional two to three months of removal work and risk damaging the structure of the garage. In order to reduce the amount of time to do this work, structural engineers recommended an alternative plan which allows a concrete overlay to the current surface. Contractors are making the Broadway side of the garage the priority in order to open both lanes of Broadway Avenue as soon as possible. They are estimating another two to three weeks, weather permitting. “We are sorry for the unexpected delays encountered during the project and understand the impact of the road closure. Contractors have assured us that they will make every effort to get the project back on track and reopen the eastbound lane of Broadway Avenue. We are hopeful to have the top level of the garage available for public use by the week of Thanksgiving,” said Greg McClain, City Manager. Renovations and repair work began on the garage this spring after evidence of stress on the garage walls led to concerns about the garage’s structural integrity. Structural engineers determined the cause of the pressure on the garage walls was a combination of settled backfill and water intrusion. Water intrusion through the porous concrete had also rusted the reinforced steel supporting the sidewalk. The settled backfill was removed, and Thursday morning crews completed the new Geofoam installation. Waterproofing was completed earlier this month.
