Support Services Division

The Support Services Division was created in 2007. Personnel of this unit accomplish many tasks that historically have been performed by the agency plus a number of functions that are new for the department. The principal consumers are both agency personnel and the general public. By creating this division as a stand alone unit, we believe that we have enhanced the agency's ability to specialize and expand the number and type of programs the Department administers. Some of the Support Services responsibilities are: Citizen Police Academy, Junior Police Academy, School Resource Officer program, Civil applicant fingerprinting, National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Animal Control, and many other programs. This division is made up of one Captain, one Sergeant, two sworn officers, an animal control supervisor, and two animal control officers.

The Captain is responsible for background investigations of applicants for permits, licenses and public housing assistance, civil applicant fingerprinting, NCIC, grant writing and management, vehicle seizure program management, firing range management, and management of the City's vehicle impound lots.

The role of the sergeant and one officer is to deliver community programs to the public. Both oversee the Citizen Police Academy, Junior Police Academy, Chaplain Corps, Volunteers in Policing Services (VIPs), and Reserve Officer Program. Typical programs include: D.A.R.E., Neighborhood Watch, Rape Aggression Defense, and numerous other specialized programs to meet the needs and desires of the community.

A school resource officer is assigned as liaison to Maryville City Schools. While his daily activities require his continuous presence on the schools' properties, the officer remains a police department employee and under the direction of the Chief of Police. He is instrumental in creating good will among students and staff and is a vital link between the Maryville Police Department and City Schools. His days are long and he typically participates in many after-hours school programs and events.

The animal control supervisor manages on-site activities at the Maryville Animal Shelter and the agency's vehicle impound lot which is located immediately adjacent to the shelter. Animal Control personnel respond to calls in the city limits, from the public for assistance with animal complaints and receive public visits at the shelter. They also perform daily operational activities at the vehicle impound lot. Click here for more information about the City's Animal Shelter.
