The City of Maryville implemented a Stormwater Utility through City Council approval in 2005.  The utility is a result of the Environmenatal Protection Agency's (EPA) Storm Water Phase II program. EPA requires cities throughout the U.S., including Maryville, to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) stormwater permit because stormwater is considered a source of pollution in rivers and streams.

The major stormwater problems that Maryville faces is a drainage system permeated with old pipes, periodic flooding caused by heavy rains, erosion along Pistol Creek, and contaminants flowing into Little River, our drinking water source.
